Dr. Garry Gordon's Bibliography

Barefoot, Robert R., and Reich, Carl L., M.D. The Calcium Factor: The Scientific Secret of Health and Youth. (1992) Bokar Consultants (US) Inc., P.O. Box 21270, Wickenburg, Arizona 85358. ISBN 0-9633703-2-4. This book discusses some extremely controversial concepts. Much of this work would appear to be incorrect based on our current understanding of calcium. However, for those who are dealing with the problem of acid base balance as it relates to the degenerative diseases, some of this work merits careful review. For example, this book recommends extremely aggressive calcium and Vitamin D supplementation, which many believe would only lead to increased calcification of our blood vessels and tissues. This book argues that Vitamin D toxicity was largely due to an earlier method of extraction, and that subsequent research which he has carefully outlined reveals extremely positive benefits from aggressive Vitamin D supplementation in doses up to one million units per week. These benefits are seen in asthma and arthritis and he believes the benefits were because the absorption of calcium was greatly facilitated and he supports this by the patients measuring their salivary and urinary ph, which became significantly more alkaline under this treatment. The author points out that the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood is markedly enhanced as alkalinity increases, and he believes this is why significant decrease in the incidence of cancer was reported by Dr. Carl J. Reich, M.D. of Canada. Dr. Reich was a board certified internist whose work was never accepted by his medical peers, but reportedly benefited more than 20,000 patients with his alkalinizing calcium Vitamin D therapy.

Basu, T.K. and Schorah, C.J. Vitamin C in Health and Disease. (1982) Avi Publishing Company, 250 Post Road East, Westport, Connecticut 06881. ISBN 0-87055-406-9. Since I recommend a minimum of 3,000 mg of Vitamin C supplementation orally every day for all of my adult patients, and we now find exciting new work with intravenous Vitamin C in the treatment of cancer being reported by Dr. Hugh Riordan of Wichita, Kansas, a past president of the American Holistic Medical Association, I believe it is necessary for everyone to become more familiar with the extensive research that has been done with Vitamin C. This is merely one of many books we will be recommending for your review.

Benarde, Melvin A., Ph.D. The Chemicals We Eat. (1971) McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York, N.Y. Library of Congress No. 79-142976. The evidence that everyone on the face of the earth is getting more chemicals than we can handle is becoming overwhelming. For example, the recently reported drop in worldwide sperm counts of more than 50% over the last 30 years clearly shows that we need increased appreciation of where these chemicals come from and what we can be doing to protect ourselves. This early book is one of many on this topic that we recommend.

Bjorksten, Johan, Ph.D. Longevity: A Quest. (1981) Bjorksten Research Foundation, P.O. Box 9444, Madison, Wisconsin 53714. Dr. Bjorksten, from the University of Wisconsin, is world famous for his work in cross-linking as an underlying mechanism of aging. He has spoken in the past to ACAM, and he is extremely interested in the benefits that chelation is producing in our patients. He has documented the involvement of aluminum in degenerative disease, and he has done work indicating that EDTA is able to reverse cross-linkages in tissue. This effect was enhanced with the application of an electric field.

Burns, George. How to Live to be 100 - Or More. (1983) G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, N.Y. ISBN 0-399-12787-9. This book suggests that a sense of humor may be more powerful than any other modality we are currently aware of.

Cameron, E., and Pauling, L. Cancer and Vitamin C. A discussion of the Nature, Causes, Prevention, and Treatment of Cancer, with Special Reference to the Value of Vitamin C. (1979) Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine, Menlo Park, Calif. 94025. Bookstore distrib. By W. W. Norton and Co., New York. ISBN 0-393-50000-4. The beneficial results reported in this book with the use of oral Vitamin C are important background to those who will want to consider the new work of Dr. Riordan with intravenous Vitamin C.

Carper, Jean. Stop Aging Now! The Ultimate Plan for Staying Young & Reversing the Aging Process. (1995) HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. 10 East 53rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10022. ISBN 0-06-018355-1. This is one of many books coming out today discussing various ideas regarding the nutritional manipulation of our aging process. There are many useful references in this book, and no one book that we have found is able to fully explore this exciting topic.

Cranton, Elmer, M.D., and Fryer, William. Resetting the Clock. 5 Anti-Aging Hormones that are Revolutionizing the Quality and Length of Life. (1996) M. Evans and Company, Inc. 216 East 49th Street, New York, N.Y. 10017. ISBN 0-87131-801-6. This new book is written by a Harvard trained M.D. who has been an integral part of ACAM, and in fact contributed extensively to the first revised protocol for the use of EDTA. He is the co-author of the book Bypassing Bypass. This book is an excellent reference text and contains useful information particularly regarding a lifetime plan for hormonal support beginning at age 40.

Dean, Ward, M.D. Biological Aging Measurement. Clinical Applications. (1988) The Center for Bio-Gerontology, Los Angeles, Calif. ISBN 0-93777-00-5. This book is written by an ACAM member who is co-author of the books on SMART drugs. This is a much-purchase book for any doctor seriously interested in learning the intricacies and complexity of determining biological age in his patient. Practical Handbook of Human Biological Age Determination by Dr. Arthur Balin, published by CRC, is considered a mandatory companion to this older text. There is probably no universally agreed measure of human aging at this time that is significantly better than the visual appearance of youth and energy that a casual physical examination reveals. However, using your own results and repeating them over time gives you extremely important insight regarding your individual rate of deterioration.

Fredericks, Carlton. Carlton Fredericks' Program for Living Longer. (1983) Simon & Schuster, Inc., 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New York, N.Y. 10020. ISBN 0-671-47237-2. Dr. Fredericks has written many extremely useful books. He has lectured in the past extensively to many doctors now in alternative medicine, and taught us many powerful nutritional strategies to deal with the various diseases that our patients are presented with.

Hager, Thomas, and Kessler, Lauren. Aging Well. (1987) Fireside, Simon & Schuster Bldg., 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New York, N.Y. 10020. ISBN 0-671-72476-2. This ten-year-old paperback contains some common-sense suggestions to improve your health.

Hallaway, Nancy and Strauts, Zigurts. Turning Lead Into Gold. (1995) New Star Books Ltd, 2504 York Avenue, Vancouver, B.C., Canada V6K 1E3. ISBN 0-921586-51-5. This well-referenced book discusses the many sources of heavy metal toxicity that continue to poison our population. Chelating doctors need to have these simple stories available for their patients to learn how they can better work with the doctor to identify how they became toxic and what this toxicity is doing to them, and what steps they can take to prevent its recurrence.

Kenton, Leslie. The New Ageless Aging. The natural way to stay young. (1995) Random House Canada, 1265 Aerowood Drive, Mississauga, Ontario L4W 1B9, Canada. First published by Vermillion/Ebury Press, Random House, 20 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London SW1V2SA, England. ISBN 0-09-1785200. This extremely valuable and well written book by Stan Kenton's daughter brings us a continental perspective. The book is not widely available yet in America, but it contains such useful and well-referenced information that I strongly urge any serious student of anti-aging medicine to make the effort to obtain and review this text.

Klatz, Dr. Ronald, and Goldman, Dr. Robert. 7 Anti-Aging Secrets for Optimal Digestion and Scientific Weight Loss. (1996) elite sports medicine publications (ESM), P.O. Box 146571, Chicago, Illinois 60614. ISBN 0-9631451-0-X. This 215-page new paperback contains some useful ideas, although it is important to read the first page, "disclaimer," which states clearly that you should not assume the material in the book to be 100% correct or safe - it is not! Doctors Klatz and Goldman have done a fantastic job of raising public consciousness regarding the human anti-aging potential. Dr. Klatz is involved in other books, including Stopping the Clock and Staying Young with HGH. I prefer the HGH book, but there's always more information for us to learn, and therefore you should plan to acquire all of books Doctors Klatz and Goldman publish.

Kugler, Dr. Hans J. Dr. Kugler's Seven Keys to a Longer Life. (1978) Stein and Day, Scarborough House, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. 10510. ISBN 0-8128-2267-6. Dr. Hans Kugler has been deeply involved in the alternative medical field for many years. This old book establishes his interest in this field 20 years before many of us began to seriously consider the possibilities.

Lerner, Michael. Choices in Healing. Integrating the Best of Conventional and Complementary Approaches to Cancer. (1994) The MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts. ISBN 0-262-12180-8. This book is by a Harvard graduate with a degree in political science from Yale. He has been deeply involved in the Office of Technology Assessment of the U.S. Congress for its landmark study Unconventional Cancer Treatments. This extremely well-referenced and well written 660-page text brings important and useful information to anyone who is diagnosed with cancer and who wants the best possible information regarding all of the possible alternatives. This book even identifies the Plane Tree health resource centers, which is the most exciting development in hospital care in our time. Dr. Lerner is president and founder of Commonweal.

Lin, Anna, and Flaws, Bob. The Dao of Increasing Longevity and Conserving One's Life. A Handbook of Traditional Chinese Geriatrics and Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines. (1991) Blue Poppy Press, 1775 Linden Ave., Boulder, Colorado 80304. ISBN 0-936185-24-4. This is the first English language text on traditional Chinese geriatrics. This book covers the Chinese approach to health problems associated with the aging process, and the use of Chinese herbal therapies in dealing with these problems.

Majeed, Muhammad, Ph.D., ed. Curcuminoids; antioxidant phytonutrients. (1995) NutriScience Publishers, Inc. 121 Ethel Road West, Unit 6, Piscataway, N.J. 08854. ISBN 0-9647856-0-9. This book discusses curcuma longa L. (fam. Zingiberaceae, also known as turmeric). Turmeric has been used in India in the ayurvedic system of medicine for centuries. This book allows a better understanding from our current scientific perspective of how and why this phytonutrient can be so beneficial to human health. Its use as an antimutagen and antimicrobial and antiparasitic, as well as its antithrombotic activity, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions, make this a useful 70-page well-referenced document for those wishing to learn how to make food their best medicine.

Mann, John A. Secrets of Life Extension. A Practical Guide for the Use of Life-Extension Therapies. (1980) Co-published by: Harbor Publishing, Inc., The Ferry Building #321, San Francisco, Calif. 94111 and And/Or Press, Inc., P.O. Box 22246, Berkeley, Calif. 94702. ISBN 0-915904-47-0. This old 1980 text explains some very sophisticated concepts including antiserotonin drugs, and outlines a life extension program to follow which is extremely sophisticated for its time. This well-written 170-page text contains 414 scientific references that truly covered the best scientific anti-aging information available in that time frame.

Millman, Dan. The Life You Were Born to Live. A Guide to Finding Your Life Purpose. (1993) H J Kramer Inc., P.O. Box 1082, Tiburon, California 94920. Library of Congress No. 93-077108. Dan Millman has served on the faculties of U.C. Berkeley and Stanford, His books have been read by more than 3 million people in 16 languages; his writings and trainings blend spiritual laws, perennial wisdom and body-mind disciplines into an approach to life he calls "the way of the peaceful warrior." This 440-page text should be considered "must" reading for those who believe that achieving the maximum useful life span will be significantly enhanced if we are on purpose with our life.

Montgomery, Ruth. Born to Heal. (1973). Fawcett Crest Book, published by Ballantine Books, New York, N.Y. ISBN 0-449-21111-8. This 224-page 1973 paperback discusses an unbelievable story that involves the ancient art of healing with life energies. Dr. Larry Dossey , author and lecturer, provides the scientific explanation for this book that discusses the greatest healer of his time who successfully treated hopeless cases for more than 50 years with the "laying on of hands."

Morrison, Lester M., M.D., and Schjeide, O. Arne, Ph.D. Coronary Heart Disease and the Mucopolysaccharides (Glycosaminoglycans). (1974) Charles C. Thomas, Publisher. 2600 S. First Street, Springfield, Illinois 62717. ISBN 0-398-02903-2. Dr. Lester Morrison, director and research professor, Institute for Arteriosclerosis Research, Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Emeritus Consultant in Medicine, Univ. of California Center for Health Sciences at Los Angeles, California, received millions of dollars from the U.S. government in grants and the American Heart Association, as well as private donors, to devise a new antithrombogenic and anticoagulent approach to the prevention and treatment of arteriorsclerotic heart disease. He published in JAMA in 1941 the very first article recognizing the involvement of cholesterol in the arteriosclerotic process, but he chose to find a nutritional strategy that would effectively deal with this problem rather than tell everyone to stop eating this essential nutrient.. This book, now out of print, explains this research in great detail. Today, with bovine and shark cartilage therapies being used extensively in the treatment of serious disease, it is time to put the Mucopolysaccharides (Glycosaminoglycans) high on our essential nutrient list. I have successfully employed a product that came out of his research as part of what I call oral chelation when I added oral EDTA to his idea. The end result was an entirely safe alternative to aspirin or coumadin.

Morrison, Lester M., M.D., and Schjeide, Ole A. Ph.D. Arteriosclerosis. Prevention, Treatment, and Regression. (1984) Charles C. Thomas, Publisher. 2600 S. First Street, Springfield, Illinois 62717. ISBN 0-398-04919-X. This 390-page textbook goes into great detail regarding Dr. Morrison's documented successful nutritional strategy for the prevention of heart attack and stroke. This is one of the first authoritative, scientifically-written textbooks to discuss and document the reversibility of arteriosclerosis. This work was virtually ignored by the entire scientific community. Fortunately the development of the PET scan allowed the later work by Dr. Dean Ornish to achieve widespread recognition so that today it is completely accepted that arteriosclerosis is preventable and reversible. Dr. Morrison simply developed an easier way years before Dr. Ornish's work.

Morrison, Lester M., M.D., with Nugent, Nancy. Dr. Morrison's Heart-Saver Program. (1982) St. Martin's Press, 175 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10010. ISBN 0-312-21481-2. Dr. Morrison finally attempted, late in his life, to popularize his work. A 220-page book for the public was written, which describes the ten ingredients that he found synergistically worked to prevent and reverse arteriosclerosis. The addition of oral EDTA to his Institute Formula simply made the formula more effective at a lower dose than was previously achievable.

Moss, Ralph W., Ph.D. The Cancer Industry. (1996) Equinox Press, Inc., 144 St. John's Place, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11217. Originally published 1980 by Grove Press, Inc. as The Cancer Syndrome. ISBN 1-881025-09-8. Dr. Moss worked at the Sloan-Kettering Institute for a short time early in his career. His tenure there taught him how corrupt the "cancer industry" truly is. Dr. Moss has continued, since that time, to document the extent of this problem and has published many useful books. This 470-page extensively referenced text is "must" reading if we are to avoid the same difficulties in solving the aging problem.

Pauling, Linus. How to Live Longer and Feel Better. (1986) W.H. Freeman and Company, New York, N.Y. ISBN (hardbound) 0-7167-1781-6, (paperbound) 0-7167-1775-1. Dr. Linus Pauling - two-time Nobel prizewinner - has published many extremely useful nutritional books. This 322-page text gives an understandable rationale for the orthomolecular approach to treating the aging problem.

Pearson, Durk, and Shaw, Sandy. The Life Extension Companion. (1984) Warner Books, Inc., 666 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10103. ISBN 0-446-51277-X. This text book by my good friends Sandy Shaw and Durk Pearson, is a companion to their number one best seller Life Extension. I doubt that anyone else has the broad-based understanding to incorporate as many significant concepts into the attack on aging as this extremely well read couple. They were doing extensive literature research long before the rest of us began to appreciate how much knowledge is buried in our libraries that we have never read or integrated into our consciousness.

Proctor, Robert N. Cancer Wars. How Politics Shapes What We Know and Don't Know About Cancer. (1995) Basic Books, A Division of HarperCollins Publishers, Inc., 10 East 53rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10022-5299. ISBN 0-465-02756-3. This important book by a professor of the history of science at Pennsylvania State University broadens the understanding that we get from Ralph Moss in his book The Cancer Industry, and allows us to understand how completely intermingled are the economic, political, and scientific questions that have made the answer to cancer appear to be so elusive. The old saying "he who does not know his history is condemned to relive it" would seem to apply to those of us who would like to conquer the aging process.

Silvers, Lewis J., M.D. Doctor Silvers' Extraordinary Remedies and Prescriptions for Health and Longevity. (1964) Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, N.J. Library of Congress No. 64-7563. This 216-page book has extremely simple strategies for dealing with symptoms associated with the aging process.

Stone, Irwin. The Healing Factor. "Vitamin C" Against Disease. (1972) Grosset & Dunlap, New York. ISBN (hardbound) 0-448-02130-7, (paperbound) 0-448-11693-6. This incredible book has allowed me to save the life of more than one patient because it supplied the necessary science to intravenous mega-Vitamin C therapy to permit me to go ahead and treat, for example, a patient with terminal chemical-induced liver damage; and multiple patients with various ineffective and neoplastic diseases.

Thomas, John. Young Again! How to Reverse the Aging Process. (1994) Also second edition, 1995. Plexus Press, P.O. Box 827, Kelso, Wa. 98626-0072. Tel. 360/423-3168. ISBN 1-884757-75-8. This current 384-page book has many natural strategies to deal with the aging problem. The author was heavily influenced by the naturopathic thinking of Dr. Paul C. Bragg and Jack LaLane. I believe this book supplies a great deal of significant food for thought that lies outside of the traditional medical mainstream, such as magnetic therapies, etc. But my current belief system has been broadened sufficiently by my years of practice and study that I feel this book provides useful thought for those interested in a broad-based approach to the aging process.

Walker, Morton. Chelation Therapy. How to Prevent or Reverse Hardening of the Arteries. (1980) M. Evans and Company, Inc. , New York. ISBN 0-87131-365-0. Book now must be obtained directly from the author at Freelance Publications, Stamford, Connecticut. This is the first book that I assisted in producing on the subject of EDTA chelation therapy. Since all of the material contained in this book and its extensive list of references came from me, I am rather biased in stating that I hope everyone considers it worth adding to their anti-aging library.

Schiff, Michael. The Memory of Water. Homeopathy and the Battle of Ideas in the New Science. (1994) Thorsons, An Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 1160 Battery Street, San Francisco, Calif. 94111-1213. ISBN 0-7225-3262-8. This extremely revealing book describes the entire scientific controversy that erupted when the first research paper proving that homeopathic substances had biological activity was published in Nature. The book documents clearly how vested interests will do anything to maintain status quo.

Erasmus, Udo. Fats and Oils: The Complete Guide to Fats and Oils in Health and Nutrition. (1986) alive books, P.O. Box 67333, Vancouver, B.C., Canada V5W 3T1. ISBN (hardcover) 0-920470-10-6, (softcover) 0-920470-16-5. This useful guide contains much of the scientific knowledge on the essentiality of certain fats that we do not get in our diet, and the danger of the highly refined and toxic fats and oils that have replaced these essential and useful nutrients in our diet. This is an extremely important and complex subject, and there will be other suggested reading in this area.

Licata, Vincent. Cultivating Intestinal Flora for Better Health. (1972) Continental Health Research, 300 North Broadway, Santa Ana, Calif. 92701. This 40-page rather old booklet contains vital information if you accept the concept that Prof. Elie Metchnikoff, the former director of the Pasteur Clinic in France, espoused: that death begins in the colon. This book briefly covers extremely important concepts about yogurt and kefir, and rectal implantation of probiotics. No one book, however, can begin to adequately cover this extremely important topic. Another useful book on this subject is Achieve Maximum Health by David Webster, included in this list.

Fulder, Stephen, Ph.D. The Ginger Book. The Ultimate Home Remedy.(1996) Avery Publishing Group, Garden City Park, New York. ISBN 0-89529-725-6. This 147-page text gives useful information about a very active food substance that many of us are only vaguely aware has some significant pharmacologic activity; and we may, for example think of it if we're going to take a cruise and want to avoid motion sickness. There is much, much more to this important food product. This is "must" reading for all of us who believe that in the final analysis, food can be our best medicine.

Kroeger, Hanna. Instant Herbal Locator. (1979) Chapel of Miracles, 7075 Valmont Road, Boulder, Colorado 80301. This extremely useful book on herbs is written by one of America's true treasures. This 90+-year-old woman in Boulder, Colorado has a lifetime history of helping people. She has many other books and pamphlets, and she truly is one of the healers of our time.

Kroger, Hanna, Ms.D. Cancer. Traditional and New Concepts. Chapel of Miracles, 7075 Valmont Road, Boulder, Colorado 80301. ISBN 1-883713-06-4. This booklet by one of America's real healers suggests simple low-tech therapies that none of us would otherwise ever learn about. The thousands of patients who surround her wherever she lectures provide strong credibility to these concepts.

Gray, Robert. The Colon Health Handbook. (1980) Emerald Publishing, Reno, Nevada. Author: R. Gray, 10569 Grand Lake Station, Oakland, Calif. 95610. This 80-page tenth revised edition continues to bring new and important practical treatments that are essential in the detoxification process.

Chaitow, Leon, and Trenev, Natasha. Probiotics. How Live Yogurt and Other"Friendly Bacteria" Can Restore Health and Vitality. (1990) Thorsons, An Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 77-85 Fulham Palace Road, Hammersmith, London W6 8JB, England. ISBN 0-7225-1919-2. This state-of-the-art 224-page book written by two extremely knowledgeable authorities on this important topic should be considered a "must" for any anti-aging library.

Dixon, Bernard. Magnificent Microbes. (1976) Atheneum, New York. ISBN 0-689-10677-7. This 252-page book written by a microbiologist who has been editor of New Scientist contains some important understanding of the function of microbes as scavengers and/or chemists. One surprising insight from this book is that germs are good for us, and how not to use antibiotics. This book provides an important background for those who will later learn about cell wall deficient forms of bacteria and the work of Dr. Enderlein of Germany and of Dr. Gaston Naessens.

Bird, Christopher. The Galileo of the Microscope (The life and trials of Gaston Naessens). (1990)Les Presses de l'Universite de la Personne Inc., 2 Desaulniers Blvd., St. Lambert, Quebec, Canada J4P 1L2. ISBN 2-921138-02-6. This important book tells the life history of a true pioneer of our time. Dr. Gaston Naessens has a profound and deep understanding of the beneficial activity of infectious organisms. His microscope is as close to the historical Rife as many of us are likely to see. Based on his observations under this microscope, Dr. Naessens was able to successfully develop new concepts in the treatment of degenerative diseases partially based on work of Dr. Enderlein. Dr. Naessens developed compound 714-X, which has successfully treated many forms of cancer. He has successfully survived an ugly battle in court over his important work.

Kastner, Mark, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac., and Burroughs, Hugh. Alternative Healing. The Complete A-Z Guide to Over 160 Different Alternative Therapies. (1993) Halcyon Publishing, P.O. Box 4157, La Mesa, Calif. 91944-4157. ISBN 0-9635997-1-2. This 346-page recent book covers many important therapies that have somehow been suppressed and largely lost to current healing practices. I am familiar with many of the useful modalities this book discusses, and I recommend this as a useful acquisition to any serious anti-aging library.

Whitaker, Julian, M.D. Dr. Whitaker's Guide to Natural Healing. (1995) Prima Publishing, P.O. Box 1260BK, Rocklin, Calif. 95677. ISBN 1-55958-495-5. Dr. Whitaker has done an excellent job in this useful text of providing safe, effective, and alternative therapies for most of the common degenerative problems that we all encounter as we age. His book has provided excellent references for the recommendations contained within it, and it must be considered a "must buy" for a serious anti-aging library.

Mindell, Earl, R.Ph., Ph.D. Earl Mindell's Anti-Aging Bible. (1996) Fireside, 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New York, N.Y. 10020. ISBN 0-684-81106-5. Dr. Mindell is a serious student of nutritional pharmacology. He has written many useful texts that can assist us in maintaining optimal health. This book is well referenced, and contains simple and useful suggestions for dealing with any health problem we may encounter as we age, from kidney stones to macular degeneration and memory loss. I consider his book a useful addition to your anti-aging library.

Lopez, D.A., M.D., and Williams, R.M., M.D., Ph.D., and Miehlke, M., M.D. Enzymes. The Fountain of Life. (1994) The Neville Press, Inc., 18 Broad Street #601, Charleston, SC 29401. ISBN 1-884303-00-5. This valuable book covers a subject most of us have had little scientific training in. This is extremely unfortunate since I have personally seem dramatic responses to aggressive enzyme therapeutic programs. This book is a "must-buy."

Barbault, Armand, translated by Campbell, Robin. Gold of a Thousand Mornings. (1975) Neville Spearman Limited, 112 Whitfield Street, London WIP 6DP, England. SBN: 854350527. This 128-page book covers alchemy, astrology, and other subjects generally not covered in our science-worshipping time. I believe there is valuable information buried in books of this type, and I recommend the acquisition of this book as an introduction to these important concepts. In Germany, the biological medicine conference recognizes 17 specific subcategories of what we call alternative medicine. One of these is spagyric medicine. This book contains a chapter regarding some of the early thinking in that area.

Washnis, George J., and Hricak, Richard Z. Discovery of Magnetic Health. A Health Care Alternative. (1993) NOVA Publishing Company. 116707 Nebel Street, Rockville, MD 20852. ISBN 0-9639560-1-9. This useful book broadens our understanding regarding an ancient form of healing that most of us have never studied. Since one company, Ortho-Logic in Phoenix, Arizona, has received FDA approval for the use of their magnetic device in non-healing fractures, I think it might be appropriate to become aware of the far broader uses of this totally safe, non-toxic form of healing. We now have recent studies reported by Dr. Jeffrey Bland in his Functional Medicine Update discussing the exciting successes being achieved in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease and multiple sclerosis with an extremely low level intensity magnetic treatment device.

Chappell, Terry, M.D. Questions From the Heart. (1995) Hampton Roads Publishing Company, Inc. 134 Burgess Lane, Charlottesville, VA 22902. ISBN 1-57174-026-0. I highly recommend this recent booklet by the current president of ACAM. It provides a handy source of information for our patients, and answers 100 common questions that our patients may have regarding EDTA chelation therapy.

Pecher, Otto, Dr.med., translated by Beese, Edward W., M.D., B.S. Oral Enzymes. Basic Information and Clinical Studies. (1992) MUCOS Pharma GmbH :& Co., Alpenstrasse 29, 82538 Geretsried 1, Germany. Tel. 49-8171/518-0. This 170-page booklet contains 135 current references about the use of oral enzymes in the successful treatment of serious diseases, including arthritis, fibrocystic breast disease, multiple sclerosis, AIDS, etc. I highly recommend taking the effort to obtain this from the manufacturer in Germany of their most popular enzyme preparation, wobe-enzyme. This information is not available in the U.S. because this would make a nutritional substance, a pancreas enzyme, into a drug. The manufacturer would have to do $250 million worth of studies, and none of us would be able to afford the product.

Selye, Hans. Calciphylaxis. (1962) The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, Illinois. Library of Congress No. 62-13922. This very important book, undoubtedly out of print, shows that Dr. Selye learned how and why the body pathologically calcifies tissues. Since aging has been documented to be associated with significantly increased levels of calcium in our tissues, an understanding of Dr. Selye's work is useful. He identified the involvement of the parathyroid hormone as an endogenous sensitizer, and then showed how surgical intervention or even the injection of an iron salt could lead to the calcification of any portion of the body. He also showed how intoxication with mercury would produce severe calcification of the renal tubules.

Schwerdtle, Cornelia, and Arnoul, Franz. Introduction into darkfield diagnostics. The examination of the native blood according to Prof. Dr. Gunther Enderlein.. (1993) Semmelweis-Verlag, D-27316 Hoya. ISBN 3-925524-02-9. This important 160-page book is published in Germany. It contains in excess of 100 perfect photographic examples of the pathologic findings encountered during blood darkfield examination. I recommend this book for anyone planning to utilize this useful microscopic technique in managing your patient's health. This represents one way to learn about excessive platelet aggregation and/or red blood cell rouleau. These conditions serve to make the blood significantly more viscous, and thus seriously impair oxygen delivery to the tissues. Platelet aggregometry testing and fibrinogen analysis are also extremely important tests in preventing needless deaths from hypercoaguable states.

Willix, Robert D. Jr., M.D. Healthy at 100. 7 Steps to a Century of Great Health. (1994) Shot Tower Books, Inc. 150 East Palmetto Park Road #320, Boca Raton, Florida 33432. ISBN 0-9639629-0-6. This recent 265-page book by a cardiac surgeon provides useful alternative therapeutic techniques. He is one of only 300 doctors in the U.S. trained in ayurvedic medicine and pulse diagnosis. He is also editor of a 425-page book offering 1200 natural remedies for more than 100 common ailments, Natural Health Secrets From Around the World. I recommend acquisition of this book.

Webster, David. Achieve Maximum Health. Colon Flora, the Missing Link in Immunity, Health & Longevity. (1995) Hygeia Publishing, P.O. Box 995, Cardiff, Calif. 92007. ISBN 0-9647537-1-5. This important book discusses vital information for those who wish to learn the complexities of colon flora, fiber, maintenance of proper colon ph, and colon cleansing. The author finds that a well-designed whey product is essential for maintenance of the optimal colon flora. The whey product he recommends is frequently tolerated in small doses even by those with milk sensitivity and/or lactose intolerance. This is because whey contains no casein. This work seems all the more important since recent research focuses on another mil related product, colostrum, which is massively enhancing immune system function in serious degenerative disease conditions. Please note that colostrum also contains a significant level of growth factors. Mr. Webster has researched colon health for 20 years, and the book contains specific references to favorite supportive products such as the ProFlora 100% Natural Whey, and the Kyo-Dophilus products, and a self-help enema system with information regarding implant techniques at home. Additional information is available from Advanced Health Solutions, P.O. Box 937, Cardiff, Calif. 92007, 800/943-0054.

This device is sold in the USA for approximately $310, and can be ordered by calling 1/800/455-9155. The device is sold with a money-back guarantee, and comes with a user guide that largely eliminates the need for the self-help guide.

Kenyon, Julian N., M.D., M.B., Ch.B. Modern Techniques of Acupuncture. (1983) Thorsons Publishers Limited, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, NN8 2RQ, England. ISBN 0-7225-0749-6. This book or its equivalent is "must" reading for anyone wishing to become knowledgeable regarding electroacudiagnosis. This book comes in a 3-volume set and contains the identification of all key diagnostic points developed by Dr. Reinhardt Voll of Germany, who is credited worldwide with first recognizing the possibility of diagnosing and treating disease by accurately measuring the resistance to the flow of electrical current at specific acupoints of the body. This technique has eliminated much of the guesswork in the treatment of patients. Now you know immediately whether a proposed therapy is beneficial or not for your patient. I cannot emphasize too strongly the importance of incorporating this major breakthrough into your practice of medicine.

Cranton, Elmer, M.D., and Brecher, Arline. Bypassing Bypass. The New Technique of Chelation Therapy. (1984) Stein and Day, New York. (1990) Hampton Roads Publishing Company, Inc. ISBN 0-9624375-1-4. Seven, M.J., M.D., ed. And Johnson, A.L., M.D., assoc. ed. Metal-Binding in Medicine. (1960) J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Library of Congress No. 60-8152. This out-of-print book provides vital information regarding the beginnings of chelation therapy. This book contains the proceedings of the second International Conference on Chelation, otherwise known as metal-binding. The conference speakers included scientists from leading medical research centers in the U.S. The successful treatment of coronary artery disease with EDTA is fully described by doctors Meltzer, Ural, and Kitchell in this important scientific document.

Moore, Thomas J. Heart Failure. A Critical Inquiry Into American Medicine and the Revolution in Heart Care. (1989) Random House, New York. ISBN 0-394-56958-X. Thomas Moore is an investigative reporter who has documented why unnecessary deaths occur in coronary bypass surgery. This book provides a new understanding of the mistaken approach to treating heart disease with needless and dangerous surgery. He discusses why the benefits of the surgery have been so often exaggerated and the risks not fully disclosed. This is important information for any person considering bypass surgery or angioplasty for the treatment of their coronary artery disease.

Walker, Morton, D.P.M. The Miracle Healing Power of Chelation Therapy. (1984) Fischer Publishing, Canfield, Ohio 44406. ISBN 0-915421-00-3. Dr. Morton Walker has written many books on this important subject. There is no one book that could adequately cover this important aspect of anti-aging medicine. The in-depth discussion of nutritional chelation formulas in this book is important information for anyone wishing to learn more about the concept of oral chelation therapy. Most of this discussion documents benefits from various formulas that do not include oral EDTA. It is my belief that this omission is based on a serious lack of understanding of the scientific literature regarding the important benefits that may be achieved by adding oral EDTA to any of these basically useful formulas.

Inlander, Charles B. and the staff of the People's Medical Society. Good Operations - Bad Operations. The People's Medical Society's Guide to Surgery. (1993) Viking, published by Penguin Books USA, 375 Hudson Street, New York, N.Y. 10014. ISBN 0-670-83778-4. The People's Medical Society have written several useful texts attempting to protect the public from bad medicine. Anyone contemplating elective surgery ought to consult not only this book, but also search the latest information from MedLine and the Internet. There are far too many risks that are not explained to the patient from most elective surgical procedures, and this book attempts to protect the public by making some of this information more readily available.

Kowalski, Robert E. The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure. (1989) Harper & Row, Publishers. New York. ISBN 0-06-016183-3. Robert Kowalski has written about medicine and health for more than 20 years. This book explains that anyone can lower their cholesterol without using the dangerous drugs being prescribed today. His book simply explains a useful dietary program based on such well documented nutrients as oat bran and niacin. This information has been successfully commercialized by Rexall Showcase International of Boca Raton, Florida, who have devised a simple packet of fiber that is predictably dropping cholesterol an average of 20% in most patients. This product is called BiosLife 2. Unfortunately, this product contains aspartame, but it works so well that perhaps we will soon see it in the marketplace without it.

Arfors, Karl E., and Del Maestro, Rolando. Free Radicals in Microcirculation. Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, Vol. 126 Sup 548. (1986). Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. There are many books and scientific articles regarding oxygen radicals and microvascular injury. This journal even provides information regarding the significance of xanthine oxidase in capillary endothelial cells. This special supplement is useful background for anyone involved in anti-aging medicine.

Fleckenstein, Albrecht. Calcium Antagonism in Heart and Smooth Muscle. Experimental Facts and Therapeutic Prospects. (1983) John Wiley & Sons, New York. ISBN 0-471-05435-6. Dr. Fleckenstein, who is credited with being the father of an entire new category of pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of cardiovascular disease - the calcium channel blockers. The author is head of the Physiological Institute at the University of Freiburgh in West Germany. The book provides important background understanding of the role of calcium in myocardial metabolism and contraction. Since EDTA acts as a calcium remover, many people believe that chelation therapy replaces the need for calcium channel blocker therapy in patients. Pages 326 and 327 of this book contains the documentation that every blood vessel in the body gradually turns to stone as we age. Chelation therapy reverses this unfortunate tendency. A deeper understanding of calcium metabolism may eventually lead to the ideal program to prevent the transmigration of calcium from bones to tissues, which may turn out to be the very best anti-aging strategy available. We know that rotifers treated with EDTA live 50% longer than untreated. EGTA extended life by 75%, and is a better chelator of calcium. [Life extension in the rotifer. Mytilina brevispina var redunca by the application of chelating agents. (SINCOCK, A.M.) J Geront 30:289-293, 1975. (5)] Effective calcium supplementation may be a key step in preventing the acidification of tissues with aging that may predispose to the accumulation of calcium in those tissues in an effort to offset the increasing acidity. We all need to pay much more attention to acid-base balance, which will not be possible without aggressive mineral therapies.

Walford, Roy L., M.D. The 120-year Diet. How to Double Your Vital Years. (1986) Simon and Schuster, New York. ISBN 0-671-46677-1. Dr. Walford's research has stimulated the National Institute of Aging to support two extensive primate animal colonies to see if caloric restriction, which has been proved successful in all lower animal models, continues to show benefits for higher animal models. No one likes the idea of walking around weighing 20% less than the usual age and height expected weight and living on extremely low calorie intake; but since it seems to be working perhaps it will provide some insight into why this is working, which will benefit us all.

Prevention Magazine Health Books, eds. Future Youth. How to Reverse the Aging Process. (1987) Rodale Press, Emmaus, Pennsylvania. ISBN 0-87857-721-1. Prevention Magazine Health Books contains many useful texts on nutrition and alternative medicine. For many years their magazine used to be the best place to learn of significant developments worldwide, because they had a large staff that read the literature of the world and picked out the useful references from this literature. Today ITS Services of Sacramento have replaced Prevention Magazine as our primary researcher and organizer of scientific literature. Nonetheless, this book contains extremely conservative thoughts for reversing the aging process which may stimulate some useful preventive actions on the part of the reader.

Stephan, Peter M. The Secret of Eternal Youth. Rejuvenation Through Dr. Niehans' Cell Therapy. (1971) Arco Publishing Company, Inc. 219 Park Avenue South, New York, N.Y. 10003. Peter Stephan is England's best known cell therapist. He runs a clinic founded by his father Dr. Ernest Stephan, who studied with the celebrated professor Paul Niehans. Further information on cell therapy is contained in the book The Youth Doctors. Current research in Europe at leading cell therapy centers such as La Prairie of Switzerland is providing up to date scientific documentation regarding the effectiveness of cell therapy. There should be no question that this form of therapy is beneficial; it now requires us to simply find how to optimize this approach.

Medina, John, Ph.D.. The Outer Limits of Life. (1991) Oliver-Nelson Books, a Division of Thomas Nelson, Inc., Publishers, Nashville. ISBN 0-8407-9114-3. Dr. Medina is a molecular biologist at the University of Washington School of Medicine. His subject includes the harvesting of fetal tissue and organs, which has major significance for anyone interested obtaining the benefits of growth factors. Obviously, when the ideal growth factors have been fully identified, recombinant technology will make such growth factors widely available without any fetal tissue contribution.

Pelletier, Kenneth R., Ph.D. Longevity. Fulfilling Our Biological Potential. (1981) Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence. 1 Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, New York, N.Y. 10017. ISBN 0-440-05016-2. Dr. Pelletier is clinical professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry at the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute at the Univ. of California, San Francisco. He has published more than 50 professional journal articles on psychosomatic medicine, clinical biofeedback, and neurophysiology. He is the author of Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer. His book is "must" reading for anyone seriously studying anti-aging medicine.

Albert, Martin L., M.D., ed. Clinical Neurology of Aging. (1984) Oxford University Press, New York. ISBN 0-19-503287-X. Written by an internationally renowned group of neurologists and geriatricians and specialists in related fields, this book incorporates the latest research in geriatric neurology. I think it is important for all serious students of anti-aging medicine to have a basic understanding of this subject, since our patients are extremely aware of their gradual loss of mental status with aging and are extremely appreciative when they see the dramatic improvements currently available therapies, such as orthomolecular, chelation, and hyperbaric readily achieves.

Hendler, Sheldon Saul, M.D., Ph.D. The Complete Guide to Anti-Aging Nutrients. (1984) Fireside, a Division of Simon & Schuster, Inc., New York. ISBN (hardcover) 0-671-50615-3, (softcover) 0-674-61438-X. Dr. Hendler's book provides a balanced approach to understanding the positive as well as negative claims regarding each of the useful nutrients available when this book was written. There have been many new studies since the publication of this book regarding all of these life extension nutrients, but there is always more information to learn.

Bland, Jeffrey S., Ph.D., with Benum, Sara H., M.A. The 20-Day Rejuvenation Diet Program. With the Revolutionary Phytonutrient Diet. (1997) Keats Publishing, Inc. New Canaan, Connecticut. ISBN 0-87983-760-8. Dr. Bland has more than 20 years of nutrition-related research. He is one of the most active writers and lecturers in the field of nutrition. His work has led to the development of a new specialty in medicine, functional medicine. His monthly audio tape provided by HealthComm, Inc. of Gig Harbor, WA, is extremely informative and useful. This book brings his extensive knowledge into a simple and easy to do program. Any patient who actually goes out and buys the foods he recommends and follows these recipes will clearly see a dramatic improvement in their health because we have so many of us operating at a sub-optimal level because of chronic ingestion of foods we are allergic or sensitive to. I highly recommend this diet for those who want to follow a cost-effective, basic program to begin feeling better.

Bock, Steven J., M.D., and Boyette, Michael. Stay Young the Melatonin Way. The Natural Plan for Better Sex, Better Sleep, Better Health, and Longer Life. (1995) Dutton/Penguin Books USA Inc., 375 Hudson Street, New York, N.Y. 10014. ISBN 0-525-94115-0. This book covers some of the exhaustive material available on this important anti-aging nutrient.

Whang, Sang. Reverse Aging. (1994) Siloam Enterprise, Inc. Englewood Cliffs, N.J. This book discusses the importance of ionized water. This phenomena has been available to the Japanese for more than 20 years and allows one to use either an acid-oxidized water or alkaline-reduced. I believe this will turn out to be a profoundly important step in our overall anti-aging program. I know we have an annual conference on advances in subtle energy and water that is held in Dallas, Texas. We need to appreciate the benefits of treatment of water with such things as ultraviolet light and magnets. This is a useful book to bring some of this new thinking to bear on the aging process. There is great potential for significantly improved water treatment which I believe will produce significantly enhanced health.

Sahelian, Ray, M.D. Melatonin, Nature's Sleeping Pill. (1995) Be Happier Press, P.O. Box 12619, Marina Del Rey, Calif. 90295. ISBN 0-9639755-7-9. This book covers some of the exhaustive material available on this important anti-aging nutrient.

Langer, Stephen E., M.D. and Scheer, James F. Solved: The Riddle of Illness. (1984) Keats Publishing, Inc. 27 Pine Street, New Canaan, Connecticut 06840. ISBN (hardbound) 0-87983-370-X, (softbound) 0-87983-357-2. Dr. Langer has done an excellent job of bringing the important work of Dr. Broda Barnes to the attention of the public. Far too many people still go through life with extremely low level energy, when the most cost effective therapy for them was thyroid. Unfortunately, physicians have been led to rely on grossly inadequate laboratory tests for thyroid function, and thus deny millions of patients the improved health that thyroid supplementation could have provided. Since anti-aging medicine today will involve supplementation of many other endocrine glands, it would be a shame to not be aware of simple tests such as the underarm axillary temperature test.

Bortz II, Walter M., M.D. We Live Too Short and Die Too Long. (1991) Bantam Books, New York. ISBN 0-553-07227-7. We strongly recommend this book and Betsy Pryor as a source of your own Kombucha.

Rousseau, David, and Rea, W.J., M.D., and Enwright, Jean. Your Home, Your Health, and Well-Being. (1988) Hartley & Marks, Ltd., 3663 West Broadway, Vancouver, B.C. V6R 2B 8 Canada. ISBN 0-88179-017-6. This book is very well referenced and carries the practical information necessary for anyone known to be significantly chemically sensitive who wants to try to design a house that will permit them to have reduced exposure to the toxins now commonly found in our homes. Dr. William Rea, co-author, is one of the founding members of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, and runs one of the most comprehensive medical centers in the world dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of chemical sensitivities.

Selye, Hans, M.D. The Stress of Life. (1956) McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., New York. Library of Congress No. 56-10432. This book was the first authoritative text to explain what medicine has learned about stress. The author, Dr. Hans Selye, is world famous for his insightful analysis of the general adaptation syndrome. This book is a classic. Note, the same author wrote the book Calciphylaxis.

Mowrey, Daniel B., Ph.D. The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine. (1986) Cormorant Books. ISBN 0-936361-00-5. This book provides many of the key references to put herbal medicine on the same scientific footing as other therapeutic approaches more commonly employed in western medicine.

Pascal, Alana, with Van der Kar, Lynne. Kombucha. How-To and What It's All About. (1995) Van der Kar Press, P.O. Box 189, Malibu, Calif 90265-2855. ISBN 9645352-0-3. One more excellent book explaining "what it's all about." There are so many health benefits attributed to this wonderful health drink that we probably should all investigate this for ourselves. Maybe this is one way to help with our acid-base balance.

Klatz, Dr. Ronald, and Goldman, Dr. Robert. Stopping the Clock. (1996) Keats Publishing, Inc. New Canaan, Connecticut. ISBN 0-87983-717-9. This very useful text should be in any serious anti-aging library.

Weiner, Michael A., Ph.D., with Goss, Kathleen, M.A. Maximum Immunity (1986) Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston. ISBN 0-395-37910-5. Dr. Michael Weiner has his degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and is one of our few ethnobiologists. His books are always well documented and easy to read. Since we all recognize the loss of immune function associated with the aging process, these simple steps to help fortify our natural defenses are extremely useful.

Gaby, Alan R., M.D. Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis. Every Woman's Essential Guide. (1994) Prima Publishing, P.O. Box 1260 BK, Rocklin, Calif. 95677. ISBN 1-55958-298-7. Dr. Alan Gaby is our walking encyclopedia on alternative health practices. He has his B.A. from Yale, his M.S. in Biochemistry from Emery University, and his M.D. from the University of Maryland. He is a past president of the American Holistic Medical Association, a member of the advisory panel to the Office of Alternative Medicine, and one of our most delightful instructors. Since prevention of osteoporosis necessarily means we curtail the calcification of our tissues, we all must become experts on the important information available in this practical and well referenced book.

Gaby, Alan, M.D. B-6 The Natural Healer. (1987) [Originally published 1984 as The Doctor's Guide to Vitamin B6] Keats Publishing, Inc., New Canaan, Connecticut. ISBN 0-87983-434-X. Dr. Gaby is a world-class authority on nutritional therapies. The references in this book should help everyone avoid the tragic ill health associated with deficiencies of this important nutrient that we find so commonly deficient in our population.

Schmidt, Dr. Michael A., and Smith, Dr. Lendon H., and Sehnert, Dr. Keith W. Beyond Antibiotics. 50(or so) Ways to Boost Immunity and Avoid Antibiotics. (1993) North Atlantic Books, P.O. Box 12327, Berkeley, Calif. 94701. ISBN 1-55643-180-5. Since we believe that the intestinal flora is so vital to the maintenance of optimal health and is in fact responsible for the activation of many key nutrients, this book is truly life saving. Everyone needs to know the practical information contained in this book along with all the other tricks you can learn, including the ingestion of 300,000+ units of Vitamin A for up to 5 days at the onset of any infectious process. We all know that we should be taking bowel tolerance levels of Vitamin C at the onset of any acute infection. But not too many people know how to use garlic and ecinachea in adequate quantities. Also we should have a knowledge of simple homeopathics that can help our loved ones not require the use of dangerous antibiotics.

Kutsky, Roman J., Ph.D. Handbook of Vitamins, Minerals and Hormones. Second Edition. (1981) Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, 135 West 50th Street, New York, N.Y. 10020. ISBN 0-442-24557-2. This unfortunately out-of-print important reference text allows you to learn the interrelationships of our vitamins, minerals, and hormones. This life saving information is unfortunately largely unappreciated by most of us. In other words, if you learn how useful zinc supplementation is in the prevention of benign prostatic hypertrophy, are you going to go years with zinc supplementation and die of an acute copper deficiency related catastrophe such as an aneurysm of the aorta or an acute cardiac arrhythmia. If you are deficient in a particular hormone, it is nice to know which nutrients can help support that function.

Wood, Lawrence C., M.D., F.A.C.P., and Cooper, David S., M.D., F.A.C.P., and Ridgway, E. Chester, M.D., F.A.C.P. Your Thyroid. A Home Reference. (1982) Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston. ISBN 0-395-32220-0. This is one more book explaining the effects of food, stress, drugs, radiation, iodine deficiency, etc. on our thyroid. We need as much help as we can get in not missing this common condition.

Stein, Dan, M.S. Least Toxic Home Pest Control. Second edition (1994); first published 1991. The Book Publishing Company, P.O. Box 99, Summertown, Tennessee. ISBN 0-913990-07-08. We find so many patients today being poisoned by their friendly pest control service. We all need to know what our options are.

Thrasher, Jack, Ph.D., and Broughton, Alan, M.D. The Poisoning of Our Homes & Workplaces. The Indoor Formaldehyde Crisis. (1989) Seadora, Inc., U.S.A. This book explains that we now have sophisticated laboratory tests that will detect antibody abnormalities that are brought about by the chemicals we all are exposed to in our home and workplace. None of us are told how much formaldehyde will degas from the particle board in our sub-flooring and the cheap cabinets that are poisoning our homes.

Winter, Ruth, M.S. Poisons In Your Food. The Dangers You Face and What You Can Do About Them. Revised edition (1991). Originally published 1969. Crown Publishers, Inc., New York. ISBN 0-517-57681-3. Ruth Winter does an excellent job on referencing this important topic. Once we become convinced that we are being poisoned, we will all begin to be more interested in supporting the organic and back to earth movements. There has to be a reason for the massive decline in sperm count reported worldwide.

Winter, Ruth, M.S. A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additivies. Third edition (1989). Originally published 1978. Crown Publishers, Inc., New York. ISBN 0-517-57262-1. We can't live without food preservatives, but are we able to live with them? We all hear of people walking past a salad bar and responding to the nitrites on the salad with the development of acute asthma. The information in this valuable resource explains to us the myriad of chemicals that have been added to our food supply. Note: none of these have been tested in combination for their toxicity, and we always find that as we add more low-level chemicals to any analysis of toxicity the result is an exponential increase in the toxicity.

Dadd, Debra Lynn. Nontoxic & Natural. How to Avoid Dangerous Everyday Products and Buy or Make Safe Ones. (1984) Jeremy P. Tarcher, Inc., Los Angeles. ISBN 0-87477-330-X. We all need to have well-referenced resource material available so we can stop being poisoned by the clothes we take to the dry-cleaner, and the toothpaste we use nightly. This researcher has done her homework. The alternative sources are well provided.

Wright, Jonathan V., M.D. Dr. Wright's Guide to Healing With Nutrition. (1984). Rodale Press, Emamaus, Pennsylvania. ISBN 0-87857-485-9. Everyone needs to have some of Dr. Wright's wonderful reference books. They are all well written and extremely readable. Dr. Wright is a true leader in alternative medicine.

Unfortunately, Dick Quinn did not bother to go into a deeper level of healing such as with EDTA chelation therapy, and he later did die. But this wonderful cost effective therapy gave him many happy years of life extension.

Roberts, Sam E., M.D. Exhaustion. Causes and Treatment. A New Approach to the Treatment of Allergy. Fourth printing (1971) Rodale Books, Inc., Emmaus, Pennsylvania. This book by an emeritus profession Univ. of Kansas School of Medicine carries an introduction by Morris Fishbein, M.D., dated June 1966, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Fishbein was the president of the AMA, and it is very interesting that this wonderful book explains how Dr. Roberts came to believe that his 25 years as a highly distinguished ENT surgeon were largely wasted because he had not recognized the basic problem of allergy. He came to believe if he co could deal with the acid-alkaline imbalance in his patients and give them adrenal cortical extract by injection as well as nutritional support therapy, that most of the surgery he had performed was entirely needless. Interestingly, the FDA has subsequently made adrenal cortex extract unavailable to the American public, claiming that it doesn't have enough cortisone in it to be effective. This is a travesty of justice, because those of us who have first hand experience with this wonderful, safe, highly effective therapy know that there is much more to adrenal gland function than the production of cortisone. This problem must one day be corrected if we are to achieve our maximum useful life span. Currently, Aeterna Company of Canada supplies an adrenal "life protein" extract through Allergy Research of San Leandro, California that may offer some support to the stressed-out and exhausted adrenal glands of our patients.

Bailey, Herbert. GH 3. Will It Keep You Young Longer? (1977) Bantam Books, Inc., New York. ISBN 0-553-02563-5. GH3 is based on the work of Dr. Anna Aslan of Rumania. She has been my guest in addressing ACAM. Her lecture was extremely interesting since she showed the reactivation of an entire nursing home with this treatment. The move showed these patients not only getting the color back in their hair, but leaving their beds and becoming active in sports including volleyball. There is a great deal to this simple treatment. We know that GH3 breaks down in the body to PABA and dimethylaminoethanol. Both of these compounds may have some of the biological activity that explains the antidepressant and anti-aging benefits seen with this remarkably simple therapy. It is possible that not all so-called GH3 products are formulated with the exact pH and stabilizing factors that Dr. Aslan provided to her patients, by injection.

Pfeiffer, Carl C., Ph.D., M.D. Nutrition and Mental Illness. An Orthomolecular Approach to Balancing Body Chemistry. (1987) Healing Arts Press, One Park Street, Rochester, Vermont 05767. Heaney, Robert P., M.D., and Barger-Lux, M. Janet, M.S. Calcium and Common Sense. (1988) Doubleday, New York. ISBN 0-385-24219-0. There is so much we need to learn about calcium. Dr. Heaney was the first to tie the calcium and osteoporosis into the public's consciousness, and it is his work that has lead to the National Institute of Health accepting and publicizing his recommendations for higher calcium intake. I believe he is on the right track, but we cannot get there without a total program which is going to include sun, Vitamin D, alkalinization, hormonal intervention, etc. We know that if you work in the fields as a Chinese peasant and live on that primitive diet, that you will maintain strong, healthy bones and not lose one-half inch per decade after age 40 as we so commonly do with as little as 350 mg of calcium in your daily diet. However, you would not have more phosphorous than calcium in your diet because you wouldn't have been putting NPK on your soil and drinking soft drinks that are pH controlled by the addition of phosphates.

Livingston-Wheeler, Virginia, M.D., and Addeo, Edmond G. The Conquest of Cancer. Vaccines and Diet. (1984) Franklin Watts, New York. ISBN 0-531-09806-0. My friend Dr. Virginia Livingston was one of the most active researchers in the treatment and prevention of cancer through her unique immune therapy program. She was among the first to recognize the infectious aspect of cancer and to develop an autogenous vaccine which, in some cases, was dramatically successful in achieving tumor regression. My friend Dr. Hager is one of the active research-minded biological cancer specialists that you can readily find in Germany. These doctors are far ahead of us, because they are not harassed by medical boards or the FDA. The therapeutic approaches they have successfully developed for biological cancer therapy are widely available, and when properly applied are dramatically successful. This book covers in detail their use of thymus, mistletoe, enzyme therapies, tumor vaccination, and immune parameter evaluation, monitoring and treatment. Although this text is entirely in German, its 256 pages provide life saving information. I recommend you obtain this text even though there may be a language problem.

I know of many patients worldwide who are convinced that his therapeutic approaches have saved their lives.

This book does not recognize the new research on human growth hormone, and does not provide adequate insight to this important topic.

Singer, Sydney Ross, and Grismaijer, Soma. Dressed to Kill. The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras. (1995) Avery Publishing Group, Garden City Park, New York. ISBN 0-89529-664-0. This book covers a topic no one else has discussed. When a woman keeps a tight bra on she is cutting off the lymphatic drainage from her breast. The data showing the longer the bra is worn, the higher the incidence of breast cancer, is overwhelming. This information needs to be widely disseminated as soon as possible. We all know that when we take the cancer out of the breast and analyze it for chemicals, the tumor has significantly concentrated the chemicals at far higher concentrations than the surrounding tissue. We cannot afford to impede the drainage of these toxic substances which accumulate in our fat tissue anyway. The Chinese utilize small magnets in special bras for women, which have shown dramatic success in getting rid of lumps and bumps in the breast.

Shneour, Elie, Ph.D.. The Malnourished Mind. (1974) Doubleday, Garden City, New York. ISBN 0-385-03909-3. Dr. Elie Shneour is an internationally known scientist, neurochemist, and graduate of Columbia University with advanced degrees from the School of Medicine at UCLA. He is a critically acclaimed author, and has served at Calbiochem as its director of research. His work focuses on the need for adequate protein during gestation, and in the first four years of the child's life, by which time its brain has reached 90% of its adult weight. The brain is so vulnerable to poor diet during pregnancy and the early years of life that we all need to learn from his book how important protein intake really is, because it can make a difference of 50 points in the IQ of the child and lead to a drastic reduction in the total number of brain cells. This is one of the reasons more than 20 million people in the U.S. are unable to compete effectively in schools or jobs. Our current focus on fast food may be bringing many of us into this high risk category. The new information that DHA is absent in all infant formulas and is another critical factor in achieving maximum IQ helps bring this problem into better focus. Now we understand that we are poisoning ourselves and, at the same time, leaving our tissues vulnerable to the adverse affect of the poison because of this malnutrition problem.

Dr. Emanuel Cheraskin is truly my mentor. This fantastically energetic and well focused physician-dentist has more than 750 publications to his credit. He did all of this important research on his own, without government or other support. He was only interested in determining the facts. Any books written by him are true classics, and should be added to your library. His work established what is now called the parabolic curve dosage relationship with all nutrients. There is with every nutrient the potential for toxicity as well as a deficiency, and to identify where the optimal intake of any nutrient is, was this researcher's life's goal. It is by standing on his shoulders that has allowed so many of us to see a different way to improve the health of our patients, and to extend our life spans.

Weiner, Ed, and Staff of the People's Medical Society. Your Heart. Questions You Have … Answers You Need. (1993) [originally copyright 1985]. Wings Books, A Random House Company, 40 Engelhard Avenue, Avenel, New Jersey 07001. ISBN 0-517-08925-4. The People's Medical Society has numerous important publications on every topic. They are very detailed, and tend to be very useful reference materials. This book, however, shows that they were badly influenced when they claimed to be independent from the pharmaceutical cartel, the American Hospital Association, etc., because they give a poorly balanced presentation of EDTA chelation therapy. But at least they did cover both sides, and that may be all we can expect when we are looking for background information on the many important topics that this group has written extensively about.

Stux, Gabriel, and Pomeranz, Bruce. Basics of Acupuncture. (1988) Springer-Verlag Berlin, Germany. ISBN 3-540-530732-X. Dr. Pomeranz is one of the leaders in bringing together scientific information on acupuncture. This small 292-page handbook opens up your understanding to a subject about which he is extremely knowledgeable. The references, etc. may help you put acupuncture high on your life extension therapy list. Remember, needling of these points is not the only approach. Many simply apply pressure or affix a magnet or treat the area with a laser, or simply take a reading to obtain information painlessly as we do in electrodermal medicine.

Brown, Thomas McPherson, M.D., and Scammell, Henry. The Road Back. Rheumatoid Arthritis - Its Cause and Its Treatment. (1988) M. Evans and Company, Inc. 216 East 49th Street, New York, N.Y. 10017. ISBN 0-87131-543-2. Dr. Brown spent his life showing that if you treated aggressively with an antibiotic such as tetracycline for a long enough period of time, patients with rheumatoid arthritis would get a beneficial response. This has only opened one door to this common and poorly treated disease. Those of us in alternative medicine have found many other less toxic methods of helping this disease. For example, there are Chinese herbal combinations that are routinely turning RA-positive patients negative in a short time. Furthermore, Dr. William Rea has found that simply eliminating the chemical load of the patient would lead to reversal of positive RA readings. There are tissue extracts made by Dr. Luc Mouton in Switzerland that alter the binding site involved in positive RA expressed disease, and also provide total relief. The many books on alternative health approaches listed in this bibliography offer many other successful approaches.

Philpott, William H., M.D., and Kalita, Dwight K., Ph.D. Brain Allergies. The Psycho-Nutrient Connection. (1980) Keats Publishing, Inc. 36 Grove Street, New Canaan, Connecticut 06840. He's been involved in a very successful approach in which he carried the work of the Princeton Brain Biocenter and Dr. Carl Pfeiffer to a new level by identifying the foods people were allergic to and eliminating them from the diet. I have personally seen a patient who had been seriously schizophrenic for many years go into complete remission with Dr. Philpott's revolutionary approach.
